Things to see in Basking Ridge

Having unique trees is one thing that Basking Ridge is famous for. And we couldn’t not be talking about what to do in Basking Ridge without talking about its famous trees. It is believed that the oldest White Oak tree in the world is located in the Basking Ridge. This 600-year-old White Oak can be found in the historic graveyard of the local Presbyterian church. This sometimes called the “Holy Tree” was 97 feet high and had a trunk circumference of 20 feet. In 2016 this magnificent tree showed signs of distress and had to be taken down a year later. Although the tree is no longer there, it is certainly a sight to see. And soon a new tree will grow because the acorn of the White Oak was planted at the very same place where the tree stood.

The other famous oak tree in Basking Ridge is not so holy. It is a solitary oak with some dead limbs growing in an undeveloped field on Mountain Road, opposite Emerald Valley Lane. If you were to trust a local legend, this particular tree is cursed. The legend says that the tree is the property of the Devil himself and therefore the tree was named the Devil’s Tree. One more sinister thing about this tree is that it has been a site of lynchings by the Ku Klux Klan in the past.
